SUMMARY:“The Secret House: Fungi in the Built Environment” with Keith Seifert
DESCRIPTION:About “The Secret House: Fungi in the Built Environment” with Keith Seifert\n(Members Only Event)\nThis meeting will be held virtually on Zoom. Members will receive the link via email. \nWe often overlook the built environment as a biological system\, partly because we design our shelters to protect us from the climate and competing organisms. Houses and other buildings contain several sub-environments\, which vary from location to location. The outer walls and roof\, the wooden or metal skeletons that support the structures\, the interior surfaces and flooring each have their own distinct mycota. Material introduced into the house\, like furniture\, bedding\, houseplants\, food\, compost\, and human\, pet and rodent inhabitants also carry fungi that might become resident. Most parts of the house are like a desert and play host to xerophiles\, fungi that do not require much moisture. Symbioses occur between some xerophilic moulds and dust mites (and possibly some insects). The abundant moisture and higher humidity of kitchens\, bathrooms and laundry rooms are like tropical rain forests. Although many of the species are benign\, understanding the biology of the fungi in a building is critical. The health of occupants can be affected by fungal spores\, β-glucan containing hyphal fragments\, or volatile organic compounds that cause allergies or asthma\, especially in children. Fungal populations may change dramatically if plumbing systems leak\, and spores can be distributed widely by air handling systems. This can have serious consequences in public or multiple dwelling buildings. Studies of indoor microbiomes are relevant to the larger topics of island biogeography and urban biology. In addition\, events that concern us on a planetary scale\, such as the phenomenon of invasive species\, sometimes also occur in the built environment. However\, its direct relevance to human health suggests the ecology of buildings deserves much more study. \nKeith Seifert is the author of the recent book The Hidden Kingdom of Fungi\, which takes readers on a fantastic voyage through the world of microscopic fungi. He spent his career as a Research Scientist for Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa as a mycologist specializing in the identification and classification of microscopic fungi that produce toxins in crops and foods. His academic publications include more than 250 scientific papers and six books. From 2014-2018\, he was the President of the International Mycological Association\, was the chair of the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi\, and was an executive editor of the scientific journal Mycologia. He retired in 2019 and is now an adjunct professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. As a writer and speaker\, Keith combines humour and philosophy to explore the interactions between science\, the humanities\, history and society. The stories in his book show the positive and negative effects of fungi on our forests\, farms\, food and drink\, homes\, bodies and human economic activities. \nIf you have any questions\, please direct them to Illinois Mycological Association  illinoismyco@gmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:Carbon cycling in forest soils: where do fungi fit in? with Dr. Peter Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:This will be a hybrid In-person/Zoom meeting.  Attend in person on the U of M St. Paul campus or watch live with Zoom. \nCarbon cycling in forest soils: where do fungi fit in? with Dr. Peter Kennedy \nDead fungal cells\, commonly referred to as necromass\, are increasingly recognized as an important source of both persistent carbon as well as nutrient availability in soils. This talk examines how a range of ecological factors influence the rates at which dead fungal cells decompose. Using lab-based manipulations of fungal traits along with field-based experiments of fungal necromass\, we show that rates of necromass decomposition are strongly influenced by both biochemical and morphological variation. \n \nPeter Kennedy is an ecologically-focused mycologist who is broadly interested in plant-microbe interactions. He received his undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College and his Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley. He joined the faculty in the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology at the University of Minnesota in 2013.  For more on Dr. Kennedy’s work\, go here. \nClub business/announcements: Reminder to submit nominations for 2023 open Board positions and Golden Chanterelle award. \n\nFor our member’s convenience\, all MMS meetings will use the same Zoom link.  This link is provided on meeting announcements and reminders. \nThis meeting is free and open to the public.  If you are not a member\, contact webmaster@minnesotamycologicalsociety.org to get details on how to join this virtual meeting.  Please do so no later than an hour before the meeting. \nIf you haven’t used Zoom before and don’t want to miss anything\, you may want to click on the meeting link to download Zoom and familiarize yourself with it at least 15 minutes prior to the meeting. \nHow to join a Zoom meeting – You do not need a Zoom account\, but you will need the Zoom app installed on your desktop or mobile device. SUMMARY:Campout Foray: The Hawnting
DESCRIPTION:Well\, fall is finally upon us and that can only mean that it’s time once again to gather at Hawn State Park for our annual campout/foray. Hopefully we’ll get some rain in the next couple of weeks to make the hunting more plentiful! The woods were pretty crispy at MoNama but well over 200 species were identified anyway\, so who knows?! \nAnyway\, we’ll be camping again in our favorite spot above the shower house\, (scout/special use area). There is plenty of room up there for tents and even for smaller caravan/campers. There is water on site but no electricity. There is electricity down below so reserve a site now iffn’ ya have to have it. \nAs always plan on being self sufficient for the weekend. Bring food\, beverages\, shelter\, bedding\, tableware\, stove\, grill/grate… whatever you need to be comfortable in the woods. Don’t forget the chairs\, hammocks\, proper attire\, baskets\, boots\, bug spray and lighting. It’s Halloween weekend so bring something festive if you like; pumpkins for carving\, candy\, costumes\, candles… The folks down below are usually very into the spirit of things\, there will be trick or treating! \nMikey and I will be there Friday noonish setting things up but arrive whenever you like\, the weekend is pretty casual. Potluck style both Saturday and Sunday nights so bring something to share if you like otherwise bring your own food. Mike is thinking oxtail soup and I’m thinking chili of some kind. Although the pizza oven worked great last year\, alas\, not this year…maybe next! \nWe’ll be hunting Saturday morning in the park at 10am at the trailheads in the day use area\, meet us there or at the campsite beforehand. Some folks might want to hike one of loops there\, I stay pretty close however\, hunting the flatter areas till about 1sh when I’ll head back to camp for lunch and a nap maybe! Like I said\, it’s a pretty laid-back weekend\, relax and enjoy! Sunday is up to you. In the past we have hunted Pickle Springs but I don’t do that anymore as there is too much packing up to do. Pickle is a very nice hike and Hickory Canyon is close by also so check ‘em out if you are in the mood. See ya there! \nIf you have any questions contact Shannon Stevens.

SUMMARY:Fall Mushroom Foray - Trout Lake\, Washington
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\n\nCome experience an enchanting and educational day learning about fall mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. \nWe will spend time developing a well rounded understanding of fungi structure\, their function in our environment and how to responsibly forage. Focusing both on the identification of edible and inedible mushrooms . This course begins and meets in Trout Lake\, Washington\, with some ‘classroom time’ (outdoor undercover setting) then we head into the field for hands on observation and identification work. \nThis is a fall mushroom foray\, meaning we will learn about any fall mushrooms we come across\, not one particular species alone (but there will be an emphasis on identification for any edible mushrooms we come across that day). Everyone attending class will receive a high-quality safety whistle to use and keep after the foray. \nRequirements: \nFolks must be willing and able to walk off trail in the woods\, in sometimes rugged terrain for this class. We will not be on even ground or on clear paths the entire time and class will happen rain or shine. You will also be required to obtain an online mushroom permit and bring the printed permit with you to class\, link for online permit sent in confirmation. \nThis course is beginner friendly! Bring your curiosity and desire to learn and you’ll be good to go. However\, as a ‘prerequisite’\, I would like folks to watch the ‘Mushrooms 101’ videos I created in preparation for the event\, linked below. \n– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – \nCourse taught by Rachel Zoller\, known for her online presence under the business name “Yellow Elanor” (yellowelanor.com). She is a Myco-Educator\, teaching mushroom foraging workshops and lectures throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as creating educational mushroom content online. \nTickets will sell out quickly! Sometimes in a matter of hours. So\, if you missed out this time\, you can still get a little education in by viewing Rachel’s Mushrooms 101 series on YouTube\, linked below\, or go to YouTube.com/YellowElanor !

SUMMARY:Fall Mushrooms\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Fall Gourmet Mushrooms\, Part I was a HUGE success. I introduced FIVE desirable mushrooms that are easy to identify and\, best of all can be found NOW. (If you missed it\, you can still sign up for the replay and all the other goodies by clicking the link above!) \nHere’s just some of the feedback I received on Class I: \n“Hi Corinne\, it was a thoroughly enjoyable class and I learned a lot. Now I know where to start when identifying the mushrooms that grow in my lawn and under my conifers!” \n“I really enjoyed the class. It was really informative\, and I am looking forward to discovering these mushrooms. Thank you!” \n“Great class. Love your enthusiasm and straight-forward content.” \nIn the last class promised I’d share more with you in the next class…and here we are! We will cover at least FIVE more (maybe a sixth\, time allowing) that are part of the next flush of findable fungi! \nJoin me\, Corinne Gregory Sharpe\, foraging expert and The Shipboard Chef for a fact-filled and informative class that will help you turn “frantically hunting” into “happily (and safely) gathering!” \nPart II will take place LIVE on Tuesday\, October 18 at 5pm PT. \nWe’ll talk about Boletes (including the KING!)\, puff balls\, lactarius and more! \nNot only will I help you identify them\, but we will talk about how to harvest and what to do with them. The class contains additional resources such as \n\nClass slides\nRecipes\nExtra Resources\n\nADDED bonus! I have partnered with North Spore\, a provider of premium mushroom grow kits and products for this series of classes. When you sign up for the class\, you are automatically entered to win one of FIVE grow kits they are providing — up to a $30 value. So\, you are practically getting PAID to take this class! AND\, you get to grow your own mushrooms in the comfort of your own home.  \nUse the code “SHIPBOARDCHEF” for 10% off your purchase\, too! \nNOTE: if you can’t join us Live\, you can still sign up and get lifetime access to all the great content\, including the class video and the entry to the North Spore drawing! \nAlthough this class is focused on mushrooms found growing throughout the Western U.S. many of the species we’ll be covering ALSO happen to be found in the Eastern U.S.\, Canada\, and Mexico. \nCan I make it any better? \nThe info for Zoom class will go out at 4pm the same day. \nThis is a longer class than most — allow for 90-minutes to be sure we get through all the great content. \nOne more added bonus: for those of you on my email list\, you know I schedule and conduct in-person forays in the Fall (and early Winter if conditions are good). A Fall mushroom class is a pre-requisite to be offered these forays since it only increases the enjoyment (and success) for you and the other participants of the field events. \nIf you don’t have the benefit of asking LIVE questions send any questions you want me to cover to corinne@shipboardchef.com \nAgain\, here’s the really good news: you will get lifetime access to the content. So\, hop on when it fits your schedule. No limit to how many times you can access the class or any of the related content like the recipes\, how-to videos and other bonuses. \nAll this (and more) for only $27! \nCan’t wait to see you at this next virtual class! \n \n\n\nI’m Corinne\, Professional Chef & foodie.\nAs long as I can remember\, I have loved food\, cooking and serving delicious dishes and meals. My creativity showed itself at an early age: at age six\, I presented my mother with my first-baked birthday cake\, frosted in home-colored lavender (grey) frosting\, decorated with fresh flowers (which\, we later learned weren’t edible….but they were pretty!) I was already foraging back then\, but maybe not so well! haha \nSince then\, I have widely expanded my abilities and experience in the food scene. I formed a business that did restaurant menu design and consulting for several of Seattle’s finest dining rooms\, including the then-Four Seasons’ Atrium Court. I have served as cookbook reviewer and recipe tester for John Howie’s cookbook\, Passion and Palate\, and have competed on the Nate Berkus Show with none other than Diners\, Drive Ins and Dives’ Host Guy Fieri as judge. Celebrity Chef and three times’ James Beard winner Tom Douglas is one of my mentors and I’ve spent some time cooking at Etta’s\, one of Tom’s iconic seafood restaurants. \nWhen I’m not on the water\, you can find me in my “land galley” (kitchen) or in the outdoors foraging for mushrooms and other “wild” foods. \nJoin me in my mission to use what the Earth has given us and make it taste good along the wa
