SUMMARY:Carbon cycling in forest soils: where do fungi fit in? with Dr. Peter Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:This will be a hybrid In-person/Zoom meeting.  Attend in person on the U of M St. Paul campus or watch live with Zoom. \nCarbon cycling in forest soils: where do fungi fit in? with Dr. Peter Kennedy \nDead fungal cells\, commonly referred to as necromass\, are increasingly recognized as an important source of both persistent carbon as well as nutrient availability in soils. This talk examines how a range of ecological factors influence the rates at which dead fungal cells decompose. Using lab-based manipulations of fungal traits along with field-based experiments of fungal necromass\, we show that rates of necromass decomposition are strongly influenced by both biochemical and morphological variation. \n \nPeter Kennedy is an ecologically-focused mycologist who is broadly interested in plant-microbe interactions. He received his undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College and his Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley. He joined the faculty in the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology at the University of Minnesota in 2013.  For more on Dr. Kennedy’s work\, go here. \nClub business/announcements: Reminder to submit nominations for 2023 open Board positions and Golden Chanterelle award. \n\nFor our member’s convenience\, all MMS meetings will use the same Zoom link.  This link is provided on meeting announcements and reminders. \nThis meeting is free and open to the public.  If you are not a member\, contact webmaster@minnesotamycologicalsociety.org to get details on how to join this virtual meeting.  Please do so no later than an hour before the meeting. \nIf you haven’t used Zoom before and don’t want to miss anything\, you may want to click on the meeting link to download Zoom and familiarize yourself with it at least 15 minutes prior to the meeting. \nHow to join a Zoom meeting – You do not need a Zoom account\, but you will need the Zoom app installed on your desktop or mobile device. SUMMARY:Fall Mushrooms\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Fall Gourmet Mushrooms\, Part I was a HUGE success. I introduced FIVE desirable mushrooms that are easy to identify and\, best of all can be found NOW. (If you missed it\, you can still sign up for the replay and all the other goodies by clicking the link above!) \nHere’s just some of the feedback I received on Class I: \n“Hi Corinne\, it was a thoroughly enjoyable class and I learned a lot. Now I know where to start when identifying the mushrooms that grow in my lawn and under my conifers!” \n“I really enjoyed the class. It was really informative\, and I am looking forward to discovering these mushrooms. Thank you!” \n“Great class. Love your enthusiasm and straight-forward content.” \nIn the last class promised I’d share more with you in the next class…and here we are! We will cover at least FIVE more (maybe a sixth\, time allowing) that are part of the next flush of findable fungi! \nJoin me\, Corinne Gregory Sharpe\, foraging expert and The Shipboard Chef for a fact-filled and informative class that will help you turn “frantically hunting” into “happily (and safely) gathering!” \nPart II will take place LIVE on Tuesday\, October 18 at 5pm PT. \nWe’ll talk about Boletes (including the KING!)\, puff balls\, lactarius and more! \nNot only will I help you identify them\, but we will talk about how to harvest and what to do with them. The class contains additional resources such as \n\nClass slides\nRecipes\nExtra Resources\n\nADDED bonus! I have partnered with North Spore\, a provider of premium mushroom grow kits and products for this series of classes. When you sign up for the class\, you are automatically entered to win one of FIVE grow kits they are providing — up to a $30 value. So\, you are practically getting PAID to take this class! AND\, you get to grow your own mushrooms in the comfort of your own home.  \nUse the code “SHIPBOARDCHEF” for 10% off your purchase\, too! \nNOTE: if you can’t join us Live\, you can still sign up and get lifetime access to all the great content\, including the class video and the entry to the North Spore drawing! \nAlthough this class is focused on mushrooms found growing throughout the Western U.S. many of the species we’ll be covering ALSO happen to be found in the Eastern U.S.\, Canada\, and Mexico. \nCan I make it any better? \nThe info for Zoom class will go out at 4pm the same day. \nThis is a longer class than most — allow for 90-minutes to be sure we get through all the great content. \nOne more added bonus: for those of you on my email list\, you know I schedule and conduct in-person forays in the Fall (and early Winter if conditions are good). A Fall mushroom class is a pre-requisite to be offered these forays since it only increases the enjoyment (and success) for you and the other participants of the field events. \nIf you don’t have the benefit of asking LIVE questions send any questions you want me to cover to corinne@shipboardchef.com \nAgain\, here’s the really good news: you will get lifetime access to the content. So\, hop on when it fits your schedule. No limit to how many times you can access the class or any of the related content like the recipes\, how-to videos and other bonuses. \nAll this (and more) for only $27! \nCan’t wait to see you at this next virtual class! \n \n\n\nI’m Corinne\, Professional Chef & foodie.\nAs long as I can remember\, I have loved food\, cooking and serving delicious dishes and meals. My creativity showed itself at an early age: at age six\, I presented my mother with my first-baked birthday cake\, frosted in home-colored lavender (grey) frosting\, decorated with fresh flowers (which\, we later learned weren’t edible….but they were pretty!) I was already foraging back then\, but maybe not so well! haha \nSince then\, I have widely expanded my abilities and experience in the food scene. I formed a business that did restaurant menu design and consulting for several of Seattle’s finest dining rooms\, including the then-Four Seasons’ Atrium Court. I have served as cookbook reviewer and recipe tester for John Howie’s cookbook\, Passion and Palate\, and have competed on the Nate Berkus Show with none other than Diners\, Drive Ins and Dives’ Host Guy Fieri as judge. Celebrity Chef and three times’ James Beard winner Tom Douglas is one of my mentors and I’ve spent some time cooking at Etta’s\, one of Tom’s iconic seafood restaurants. \nWhen I’m not on the water\, you can find me in my “land galley” (kitchen) or in the outdoors foraging for mushrooms and other “wild” foods. \nJoin me in my mission to use what the Earth has given us and make it taste good along the wa
