About Pikes Peak Mycological Society
Pikes Peak Mycological Society was founded in 1974 by Athalie “Lee” Barzee for the purposes of the identification and study of mushrooms. PPMS is a non-profit whose members consist of people completely new to mushrooms, to expert mycologists.
Becoming a member
Anyone is welcome to join the PPMS and becoming a member is easy. Simply download the PPMS Membership Application and PPMS Liability waiver and fill them out. Then mail the forms into the address located on the application or scan and email it back to: [email protected]. Membership dues can be paid via PayPal or personal check. Please see their website for complete instructions. The cost for a one year membership for new members is $30. A lifetime membership is $300 for an individual or $400 for a family.
Membership benefits include exclusive members-only forays. These forays come with many valuable perks such as:
- Hands-on experience and guidance from knowledgeable experts
- The opportunity to meet other amateur mycologists
- Tips and advice about when and how to find the bust mushrooms in Southern Colorado
- The EXACT locations of the societies favorite mushroom hunting grounds
Events
PPMS puts on several events throughout the year. Some of events they have had in the past are:
- Workshops on how to grow mushrooms at home
- Microscopy workshop and DNA Sequencing
- Volunteering to time to clean up the community
- Using Mycelium to create sustainable building materials
- How to train your dog to find things in the woods
- Tastings
- And so much more!
PPMS is very active society and has a lot to offer anyone interested in mushrooms. Whether it’s learning how to grow them, finding them or getting general information, PPMS is great resource.

You can keep up with PPMS through their Instagram and Facebook groups located below. They also put out a quarterly newsletter called, “Spore Addict”. The newsletter contains details about upcoming events, contact information of the board members and mushroom related articles.
