About Mycological Association of Washington, DC (MAW)
The Mycological Association of Washington DC is a nonprofit organization for anyone interested in Mushrooms in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. They have an excellent website, active Facebook page and a great YouTube Channel. From scholarships to events, culinary activities and photo contests, they are sure to have something you’ll get excited about.
Becoming a member
Everyone is welcome to join and become a member of this group. The cost is $20 for an individual and $30 for a family. You can purchase your membership directly on their website, HERE. By joining the organization, you will unlock many opportunities such as:
- Participating in guided mushroom forays with expert identifiers
- Monthly online meetings which feature virtual identification and a presentation
- Fungi tasting dinner and a culinary co-op group
- Access to their newsletter, the “Potomac Sporophore”.
- Participating in their annual Sequanota Weekend Foray (additional charge.)
- Participate in their Fungal DNA Sequencing group
- Lastly you can join the North American Mycological Association at a reduced rate.
Special Events
MAW holds at least a dozen mushroom forays every year. During mushroom season, you can expect to find Morels, Chanterelles, Hen of the woods and many others. In late fall, they even go on a few outings focusing on tree lichen identification.
MAW also holds an annual photo contest with several different divisions. They have a division for: Macro/Microscopic, Pictorial, Documentary and Judges Option. To participate in the photo contest you must be a current member. You can read more about the photo contest HERE.
Staying up to date
The best way to stay up to date with MAW is their Facebook group or their YouTube channel. Both are very active.
The Mycological Association of Washington DC is a great society to be a part of. If you are nearby, you should definitely check them out and get involved.
