About Minnesota Mycological Society (MMS)

The Minnesota Mycological Society is an educational organization dedicated to the study of mushrooms and other fungi.  Their members work with professional mycologists to help build the mycological collection at the University of Minnesota and educate the public about Fungi.

The interests of the MMS include the following mushroom related activities:

• Collecting and identifying mushrooms
• Cooking with mushrooms
• Photographing mushrooms
• Arts and crafts with fungi

The MMC holds regular forays, guided mushroom hunts, from May to October.  The forays are for finding and collecting wild mushrooms, as well as improving your mushroom identification skills.  In order to participate in these forays, you will need to become a member of the organization.

Becoming a member

Annual membership to the MMS will cost a student $15, an individual $20 and a family $25.  The memberships are on a calendar year basis and provide you access to several special events put on by the MMS.  You can read more about becoming a member of their website. 

Special Events

Special events are for MMS members only and include the following.

• Organized forays during the mushroom fruiting season
• Access to the quarterly newsletter
• Lectures by mycologists and experts
• Identification workshops
• Annual photo contest
• Pot luck dinner, awards banquet, picnic foray, cooking demonstrations and more

The MMS also puts on two mushroom certification classes for edible mushroom foraging.  This certification is required to sell wild mushrooms to food establishments in Minnesota.  You can read more about the certifications on their website.

Staying up to date

The MMS has an excellent website, as well as a Facebook page and YouTube Channel.  Also, if you become a member, you will receive the quarterly newsletter.  

The Minnesota Mycological Society is an excellent resource in Minnesota for those interested in mushrooms and fungi.  Whether you are brand new to the fascination of fungus or a professional mycologist, the MMS has plenty to offer everyone.
