About Gulf South Mycological Society
The Gulf South Mycological Society is made up of amateur and professional mycologists. It is a non-profit organization that promotes the study and appreciation of fungal flora in the Gulf Coast region. This society is affiliated with the North American Mycological Association. Because the gulf coast region produces an incredibly diverse variety of mushrooms, it is not uncommon to find the following types of mushrooms during a members only Foray:
- Agaricus
- Amanita
- Armillaria
- Auricularia
- Boletus
- Cantharellus (Chanterelles)
- Cortinarius
- Hericium
- Lactarius
- Pleurotus (oysters)
- Pluteus
- Lycoperdon (Puffballs)
- Russula

Becoming a member
Anyone is welcome to join the society. Annual membership costs are $15 per person and $20 per family. Inquiries should be made to the Societies treasure at: [email protected].

Special Events
The society conducts two major events each year. They are usually in mid July and early December. They also hold mushroom walks on the weekends. Activities are generally planned on Saturdays and are held anywhere from Texas to Florida.
Staying up to date
There are two main ways to stay up to date with the Society. The first is the group’s private members only Facebook group. In this group members can share photos, start discussions and ask questions of other members.
The second way to stay informed is the Societies newsletter. The newsletter is published 3 times per year. In this newsletter you can expect to find events that the Society is holding, as well as other general mushroom related topics. They also share a species list of the different types of fungi that have been found.
